July is UV Safety Awareness Month

As everyone enjoys the outdoors and the hot summer days it is important to remember the risks of UV radiation from the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) rays that come from the sun are invisible but can contribute to skin and eye damage.

Make sure to limit your time in the sun during peak hours between 10 am to 4 pm and to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, of at least 30, regularly throughout the day. When choosing a sunblock Dr. Pardo recommends choosing one that is paraben free and coral reef safe like Stream2Sea Sport Sunscreen. Don’t forget protecting your eyes is just as important as your skin and to wear sunglasses to prevent damage.

Fun fact: Sunshine is a great way to boost your vitamin D. In fact, our skin manufactures a type of vitamin D that is called sulfated vitamin D which is superior in its activities in the body than what we can take as a supplement. Vitamin D can only be made by the skin when you do not have sunblock on, so getting 10-30 minutes a day during safe windows (such as the early morning) is best. A general rule-of-thumb is that you can go without sunblock for half the length of time it would take your skin to turn pink or otherwise start to show the first signs of a burn.
