April COVID Updates

The BA.2 Omicron variant now accounts for most cases in New England. The oral medication Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir-ritonavir) remains effective against this variant and is typically the best option for treatment for most patients. It must be started within 5 days of symptom onset, so please be sure to contact our team upon having a positive COVID test result.

Recently the CDC also updated its recommendations to allow individuals with certain underlying medical conditions and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster. This additional booster is effective in increasing protection against severe diseases from COVID-19. Those patients who received a primary vaccine and booster dose of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine at least 4 months ago may also now receive a second booster dose using an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

These recommendations are based on data that show importance of vaccination and booster doses to protect individuals both from infection and severe outcomes of COVID-19. During the recent Omicron surge, those who were boosted were 21-times less likely to die from COVID-19 compared to those who were unvaccinated, and 7-times less likely to be hospitalized.

As a reminder, Synergy does have the Moderna vaccine available for both the primary vaccine series and booster doses in our office.  If you are interested in receiving this, please inform our team via email or Patient Gateway and we will provide more details on how these vaccination appointments can be scheduled on “vaccine clinic” days.  Kindly note that at this time our office is exclusively able to carry Moderna and NOT other vaccine types (to include Pfizer).
