Lose weight, eat healthier, stress less. Sounds familiar, right? With the start of a new year, we frequently set goals to help us reach what we believe is a better version of ourselves. Perhaps you wish to be happier, less stressed, wealthier or nicer to those around you. To meet your resolutions, it is important to set realistic expectations that will work for you and your lifestyle. Here are some simple ways to rethink your resolutions and help keep you on track.
Based on your own personal priorities and strengths, set goals that are realistic and achievable. Just because it worked for your friend or colleague does not necessarily mean that it will work for you. Focus on creating resolutions that you believe you can keep. Expecting to go to the gym every day may be unrealistic for you but choosing to go to the gym three days a week is something you can achieve…and feel good about! Over time, you will see the benefits of going to the gym and you can begin to add in more days as a result.
Write your goals down and tell your friends and family. Doing so will help to keep you accountable and encourage you to stick with your resolutions. Loved ones can help you during setbacks and celebrate your successes. Applications on your phone or notebooks can also serve as a great way to track and chart your progress.
Start over…and over
Often we may falter from our resolutions. Cake on a friend’s birthday or failure to make it to the spin class you told yourself you would attend in the morning. We have all been there! The good news is it is never too late to start over. These bad habits do not need to wait until 2020 to change. Instead, eat more vegetables at dinner if you had a muffin for breakfast. Run an extra five minutes tomorrow if you failed to make it to the gym today. If you are excited and eager to make a change in your life, don’t let one misstep take away from that. Instead, start tomorrow – you will be surprised what you can accomplish!
No matter how small, acknowledge successes along the way and forget perfection. If your goal was to lose twenty pounds but you only lose five, feel grateful for that. If you were only able to go to the gym for ten minutes today, feel grateful for that as well. Health changes are often incremental and do not happen overnight. Take time each day to acknowledge success as you tick off steps on your path to reaching your final goal. If you are progressing, you will be successful!
