Synergy Private Health December updates

COVID updates:

Vaccination Boosters

Synergy members are reminded that everyone over the age of 18 is now advised to obtain a COVID booster vaccine. For those who received Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, a booster is appropriate six months after receiving the second dose. For individuals who have moderate or severe immunocompromise, boosters should be given six months after receiving the third dose. Patients who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine can obtain their booster two months after receiving a single dose vaccine. You may choose which vaccine you receive as a booster dose. The CDC's guidelines do allow for this type of "mix and match" dosing for booster shots.

Omicron Strain

We also know that many members are concerned about the omicron strain. The CDC is closely tracking this strain due to its large number of mutations compared to other strains; many of these mutations are in the part of the viral genome that contains instructions for making the “spike” protein. Changes to the spike protein may be troubling since some are already known to make the virus more transmissible, and it is possible that others may further increase transmissibility. We do know that the omicron strain is highly infectious - it was first seen in South Africa’s Gauteng province where it now represents nearly all cases. However, we don’t know directly how it compares to the delta strain. We also don’t know how its mutations may affect vaccine efficacy; however, we do know that with previous strains the vaccines have been incredibly effective in reducing both the likelihood of being infected and the severity of disease for those who are. We expect to have more data on this in the coming weeks.

For now, the best measures for prevention and protection continue to be vaccination (with booster as above) and to use risk reducing steps including indoor mask wearing when you are not in your household. We also remind you to wash hands and practice good hygiene to reduce the likelihood that you acquire flu, colds, or other infections which can have symptoms that are similar to COVID.
